Money magazine Comments - Can shops really demand an EFTPOS minimum spend?

"EFTPOS minimum $10". We've all seen these signs, and to make matters worse, some retailers also charge an EFTPOS fee. So can retailers really demand an EFTPOS minimum spend?

It's the government's fault LOL. business.gov.au says:

Make sure EFTPOS payments don't make a loss
EFTPOS providers often charge transaction fees. Make sure you are not making a loss when you sell items by EFTPOS. For example, you could charge extra for EFTPOS or have a minimum purchase amount to make sure you're not making a loss.

Government should take over eftpos payment system and provide them free of charge to the merchant. That would be a proper way of doing it. Smaller merchants are actually charged big fee by the banks for eftpos transactions. Years ago I have seen it with my own eyes a merchant that was charged $3.25 per eftpos transaction (this is not a typo). And I believe you can guess it, it was one of the big four. If I were to own a business in Australia that would be a bank. Nice.

Reply to article

For original story, Click Here.

Hi Elvis,

We covered the ban on excessive credit card charges in September.

However, this ban does not cover EFTPOS purchase minimums.
