Easy to avoid gift cards from dodgy companies, and ones that have a use by date is to give cash. The advantages is that it doesn't expire, you can spend it anywhere, and if giving cash to older children or young adults then they get a better idea of handling cash.

If the gift card is unable to be spent online, I'd pursue them from a refund of the gift card now rather than later. If not, I'd spend it now rather than later, so you have some goods. It's unlikely they'll refund you the card after official liquidation. They also don't legally have to. (I work in customer rights and it's a common grievance!)
