You may be interested in a book that addresses exactly this issue a few years back called "Sell Up, Pack Up and Take Off" by Stephen Wyatt and Colleen Ryan. It goes through all the issues: Financial, Medical, Visas etc etc and is thought provoking even if you don't eventually head off. The authors (from memory) were two Ex Financial Review journalists who speak to a number of Australians now living in Bali, Vietnam, Malaysia, France and other parts of Europe...

Why not add Thailand or Malaysia to your list (I seriously considered Thailand when working short-term teaching there) The Thais are incredibly nice as are Malaysians and both have large expat communities. Sri Lanka is another option but pricier. Mexico has crime problems that are unsettling.
