These banks, which donated millions to the referendum campaign, now deprive those same communities of banking facilities - on the basis of cost effectiveness. The wasted donations would have been better spent supporting local branches and the rural communities they serve.

Reply to article

For original story, Click Here.

I live on the Mornington Peninsula, and I'll be the first to admit I love online banking and rarely go to a branch, but when I do the trek to find one is frustrating. Of a bigger concern to me is the withdrawal of bank ATM's and their replacement by fee for service units.

I rarely use cash if I can avoid it, but if I sell or buy something on marketplace etc. the lack of a facility to handle cash is challenging.

New limits by supermarket on withdrawals, and a 'home in the wall' post office with queues for miles are exacerbating the situation.

Reply to article

For original story, Click Here.

We still have cheques, the banks must transport the cheques to the central processing area in time to get the cheques processed. When the distance to the processing centre is say 500 kilometres this can be costly. Cheques will be gone soon.
Getting Armaguard to transfer cash to and from the country branches must be costly. Finding trained staff to relieve permanent bank staff for any type of leave would be difficult.
Cash is on the way out, we are using EFTPOS, online banking etc. - are we being forced to stop using cash because the branches/ATMs are closing or because the alternatives are better - I don't know.
There still has to be a lot of work done before we are a cashless society. The systems go down too often for my liking and there are other issues.
. Banks going offline
. Telcos going offline
. NBN goes down or takes too long to set up in a new business
. EFTPOS machines break down
. Scam need to be addressed
. The limit on the online banking needs to be increased - there should be no limit.
. We need real time transaction for when you buy a car privately both sides are satisfied.
I did laugh our local branch did close - the spin was you can get cash out at Coles and Woolworths. Well you can if you buy something and they have limits. With every one paying by card there will soon be no money in the cash register to do cash out.
I still use cash as in some shops I get a discount for cash - or I don't have to pay the surcharge.

Reply to article

For original story, Click Here.
