Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a flawed concept yet to be proven successful at large scale.

Pumping carbon dioxide (CO2) underground or beneath the seabed has been used to extract remnant oil and gas - known as enhanced oil recovery (EOR). 'Capturing CO2' in order to extract and produce more fossil fuels is not consistent with the Paris Agreement.

The risks of CCS are also concerning - leakage, containment and ocean acidification. The trailing liabilities for CCS are not yet known - all Australians may be held responsible for all risks, maintenance, undersea leaks, etc.

The recent Sea Dumping Bill 2023 presented to Federal Parliament was also flawed and in need of amendments.

The main role of CCS is to allow the continuing extraction, production and combustion of oil and gas - it will not reduce overall CO2 emissions or help our environment.
