I totally agree. Thank you for that question and for Paul's response. Assets mean nothing in credit card applications. Despite owning rental properties, shares and super, as retirees we got rejected for a credit card application. Besides PAYG income there was no question about other sources of income. We have credit cards but as 28 degrees started charging a monthly fee, we wanted a new international fee free card. Bankwest Zero application rejected although we have a perfect credit history. There is a definite discrimination against self funded retirees when it comes to credit card applications. If Paul gets rejected what hope do we have? A bank needs to step up and look after retirees who will form a huge cohort in the coming years. I was told to try Bendigo Bank and I will be doing that soon.

Reply to article

For original story, Click Here.

Hello Like Paul Clitheroe another Financial Guru Noel Whittaker advised of the problem of getting a credit card when one is retired. My wife also was rejected by two banks and I wrote to the Bendigo Bank suggesting they take up the challenge and issue credit cards for seniors. They replied that they were open to considering what applicants could provide in the way of assets etc and in particular they consider superannuation funds either in accumulation or pension mode. My wife has a fair amount in superannuation and was successful in obtaining a credit card with Bendigo Bank. I had a credit card with Latitude who are now charging a monthly fee and so applied to Bendigo Bank
for a no fee credit card and have been successful albeit it took a while as they have been inundated with requests I guess due to the change by Latitude. So all sign the praise of Bendigo. Hope this helps

Reply to article

For original story, Click Here.

Sorry to say just got rejected by Bendigo Bank application as I "did not meet credit requirements", and I didn't even get a chance to put my name or identity details!!!! Ridiculous!
I have the application number and I will give them a call to follow up.
I was not aware until last week that upon my death, my spouse who is secondary cardholder will be cut off from using the credit card. How known is this little fact by retirees or non retirees.

Reply to article

For original story, Click Here.

I just had a similar experience. I've had a credit card with ME bank for years but they now advise they are closing their credit card facility by July. I decided to apply for a CBA card as I do everyday banking with them, and have healthy money in my accounts with them. I'm retired but we have significant assets and rental from a property. There was no capacity to explain online and provide more detail, after being told by email that I was provisionally approved, I was then told that I had been declined due to insufficient income.
I went to the bank in person to query it and after a very long wait and discussion in public in full hearing of everyone there, we waited on the phone there and I was told ' they can't do anything about it as the decisions are made offshore'.
I thought it was appalling and I was made to feel like a second class citizen. ( I was only asking for a small credit limit for convenience). I now have approval from another bank who gave the opportunity to explain , but I'm not happy! I think it shows frank discrimination because I am retired.

Reply to article

For original story, Click Here.
