Australia is in the midst of a staggering change in the new-car market.

The country has never before seen such an onslaught of new brands. China is the biggest automotive change-maker here and overseas, and since last year's Best of the Best, we've seen unprecedented value for buyers across most segments.

With an increased focus on electrification as the market moves towards strictly mandated efficiency standards, there are more petrol-electric hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options in our winners' list this year, and the Chinese brands have made a big mark.

Small SUVs have effectively replaced hatchbacks in our market and in 2025 these compact cars  officially account for more than one-in-five showroom-floor sales.

For our petrol-powered best small SUV options, the Chery Tiggo 4 Urban takes the top gong, with its tiny footprint, turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, sub-$24k driveaway price and long equipment list helping it secure the win. It also has a seven-year warranty and cheap servicing.

Another Chinese choice is the MG ZS Excite, for a couple of grand more. Service with MG, and get up to 10 years' warranty (in-house maintenance is pricey).

Our top three? Consider the made-in-India Suzuki Fronx. For less than $30k, you get a mild-hybrid engine, comfy cabin and plenty of standard equipment from a brand known for reliability.
