Consumer Finance Awards 2025: Margin Lender of the Year

NAB has been named Money's Margin Lender of the Year as part of the 2025 Consumer Finance Awards.

Margin loans give investors easy access to funds to enable them to react quickly to opportunities.

This is especially handy with opportunities that have deadlines, think IPOs, capital raisings, share purchase plans or rights issues. If you must decide what to sell before you can take advantage of opportunities, you can miss out or make costly mistakes because of time pressure.

Margin loans can certainly help you make money but if they're not used with care, they can also amplify losses.

NAB is the winner of this year's Margin Lender of the Year award and its website reflects the importance of customers who are using a margin loan to closely monitor their facility on a regular basis and take prompt action if they are in a margin call position.

Investors can manage risks by gearing conservatively, diversifying and monitoring investments and paying interest regularly, according to the NAB website.

With NAB's new What-If calculator, customers can better understand the impact of market events, individual price fluctuations, loan balance and portfolio changes.

The NAB Margin Loan gives you access to a broad range of investment options on the ASX and international bourses including securities, exchange traded funds (ETFs), managed funds, and hybrids. Indeed, it covers more than 2500 approved investments and more than one thousand approved international equities.

It offers competitive fixed and variable rates, and you can apply to change from one to the other over part or all your loan when it suits you. Variable rates currently range from 9.25% for more than $1 million to 9.75% for less than $250,000. A full rundown is available at nab.com.au.

Your margin loan gives you access to a personal relationship manager who will look after your facility and assist you with any queries.

Margin loans can also provide some tax advantages, according to NAB. For example, you may be able to claim a tax deduction for the interest you pay on the loan and with a fixed rate loan you have the ability to pay your interest in advance for up to 12 months, allowing you to bring forward an expense if that suits your circumstances.

NAB's suite of investor loans includes the NAB Super Lever, a limited recourse margin loan for self-managed super funds (SMSF). With this facility NAB's recourse against the SMSF is limited to the acquired asset held as loan security, and maximums apply to the value of assets acquired.

Leveraged Equities, last year's winner, placed second. It has three margin lending products, Margin Loan, Investment Funds Multiplier, and the Direct Investment Loan.

CommSec was third, after coming in second last year. The CommSec Margin Lending Account enables you to invest in Australian shares, ETFs and managed funds.
