1. Immerse yourself in science and technology at Questacon: The kids (little and big) will love visiting the National Science and Technology Centre. All kinds of fun and interactive exhibits will entertain the family for hours. Open daily 9am-5pm except Christmas. Adults $23, concession $17.50.

2. Visit Parliament House: Free guided tours of this iconic building run five times a day and include the House of Representatives and the Senate. It's also worth taking the time to admire the impressive art collection.

3. Take flight in a hot air balloon: All jokes aside about politicians and hot air, ballooning over Canberra at dawn is a breathtaking experience. There's a number of companies that offer the dawn flight. Pricing varies but, as an example, dawndrifters.com.au offers weekend flights for $300 (adult) and $225 (child). Weekday flights are cheaper $250 (adult) and $200 (child). Children under 6 are unable to participate.

4. Go to the National Arboretum: Vast pine plantations once stood on this site. After the 2001 and 2003 bushfires devastated the plantations, the ACT government dedicated the 250 hectares to the new arboretum, which is now home to a large collection of beautiful forests including Wollemi pines. Take a picnic lunch or eat in at the cafe. Entry is free.

5. Wander around the Australian War Memorial: This world-class museum commemorating the sacrifice Australians have made during times of conflict houses an extensive showcase of military collections. The World War I galleries were reopened in November 2014 after a $32 million renovation. Visit awm.gov.au for more centenary information. Open daily 10am-5pm except Christmas. Admission is free.
