Adventure train trips still pull plenty of customers

At one time it seemed railways would largely disappear in favour of aircraft.

There certainly was some considerable collateral damage, but trains and train buffs didn't disappear and nowadays "adventure" train trips pull plenty of customers.

Destinations are many, but I hadn't heard of doing Taiwan by train, until I caught Scott McGregor's latest line-up.

McGregor's face is well known from 30 years as an actor and television presenter/producer. These days he runs Railway Adventures, offering addicts access (at a price) to some of the world's best outings. The Taiwan surprise is described on his website (railwayadventures.com) as follows:

"Taiwan is a treasure: mountainous, scenic and full of contrasts. This autumn adventure begins in bustling Taipei. You'll be whisked by high-speed train to the magical resort of Sun Moon Lake and then sedately climb - on Victorian era switchback railways - the mountains and giant cypress forests of Mt Alishan. Head south to Kaohsiung City, across to historic Taitung and then, hugging the east coast, along the ravines and cliffs to stunning Taroko Gorge."

The 11-day adventure costs a twin-share couple $3950 each (single supplement $985). Accommodation is said to be five-star with most meals included. Plenty of airlines fly to Taiwan, including budget outfits like Scoot and Air Asia, so you could save a bit of money that way.

There are railway adventures in many other countries, including Vietnam, Italy, India, Scandinavia.

Also check out McGregor's "luxury mountaintop hideaway built from vintage railway carriages". Train buff heaven!
