Most people know they can earn big from bonus offers on points-earning credit cards and from shopping rewards like flybuys, where you can leverage petrol and grocery spending towards points.

But there are plenty of other methods to earn points. From hotel bookings to utility bills and even Qantas's new car insurance program, ensure you leverage as much of your spending as possible to earn points at every opportunity.

Here are the seven lesser-known ways that will earn you frequent flyer points.

Switching your car insurance

Qantas has introduced Qantas Car Insurance, adding vehicles to its range of insurance offerings. There is a current offer to earn a bonus 20,000 Qantas points if you join or switch car insurance before December 20.

You also earn one point per $1 spent on your premium. Additionally, you can also earn 6000 points if you join the new Qantas Car Insurance policy via the Qantas Wellbeing app by completing certain car-based challenges and participating in daily and weekly sleep and walk challenges.

Booking holiday accommodation

Before locking in that hotel booking, check whether the same room is available to book via points-earning portals such as Rocketmiles and the Virgin Australia portal Expedia.

Rocketmiles is offering 5000 bonus Velocity points for first-time users, in addition to the bonus points it offers for eligible properties, such as the InterContinental in Dubai and the Hilton in New York, which can earn you 15,000 points each. Meanwhile, you can choose from 650,000 hotels through Expedia and earn three Velocity points per $1 spent on hotel bookings.

Buying a new car

This may not be as easily attainable or an option for many, but did you know you can earn Qantas points from Land Rover?

Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Business Rewards members can now earn up to 25,000 points when buying eligible Land Rover vehicles by quoting your membership number when purchasing from authorised retailers.

Sending parcels

Velocity has partnered with courier company Sendle, so you can earn five points for every domestic parcel delivery and 10 points for international parcel delivery. To earn points, you will need to have a Sendle account (or create one) and link it to your Velocity membership number.

Subscribing to a new streaming service

Are you a sports fan? Consider subscribing to Kayo Sports, a streaming service featuring more than 50 sports live and on-demand. With its most premium plan, costing $35 a month, can earn you 1500 Qantas points as a new subscriber and 150 points a month when you continue your service.

Switching to sustainable energy

One of Qantas's many program partners is Solargain, a solar energy specialist, which is offering 5000 Qantas points  for every solar PV system or hot water system installation or upgrade.

Simply provide your Qantas frequent flyer details on quotation and you will receive the points 60 days after installation and payment.

Dining out

Qantas has a partnership with Quandoo, a reservation platform for more than 18,000 restaurants across 12 countries. When you book a table through this portal, you can earn 100 Qantas points per diner.

Popular restaurants to choose from include Salt Meats Cheese and Criniti's in Sydney and Grossi Florentino and Flower Drum in Melbourne.
